Practice description

Brock Martland, QC is a senior criminal lawyer handling trials and appeals, mainly for the defence but also, in the barrister tradition, for the Crown. A graduate of Queen’s University and the University of Victoria, he clerked for the Honourable Mr. Justice John Major at the Supreme Court of Canada, then completed articles with the Vancouver Crown Counsel office, before joining the firm of Smart & Williams in 2001. The present firm of Martland & Saulnier is the successor to that firm.

Mr. Martland has acted as defence counsel in high-profile cases such as the Surrey Six murder trial, the Yaletown bike-store shooting, and the Air India terrorist bombing. He occasionally conducts trials and appeals for the Crown. He was associate commission counsel for two public inquiries: the Frank Paul Inquiry, and the Cohen Commission of Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River. He has extensive experience with extradition cases and youth justice prosecutions. He has also been involved in numerous Police Act disciplinary matters.
